The paper describes an approach for gesture and action recognition based on a vocabulary that is constructed by the maximization of intra and inter class mutual information. An extensive experimental evaluation is performed over several benchmark collections.

Four papers have been accepted for publication in the top venues on evolutionary computation: GECCO and CEC. The accepted papers are:

• An Adaptive Random Search for Unconstrained Global Optimization. Jonás Velasco, Mario A. Saucedo, Hugo Jair Escalante, Karlo Mendoza, Cesar Emilio Villareal, Oscar Chacón, Adrian Rodríguez, Arturo Berrones. Computación y Sistemas, Accepted 2014.

Pastor López-Monroy (PhD student directed by Manuel Montes-y-Gómez and myself), developed the method that obtained the best performance of the Author Profiling task at PAN’13. A total of 66 teams registered for the competition 21 of which submitted software for the final phase. Pastor’s runs obtained the best average performance over English and Spanish corpora. Additionally, Pastor received a prize in memoriam of M. Teresa Turell sponsored by ForensicLab of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. Pastor´s method implements second-order representations, which can capture semantic information and besides are highly efficient. The method is described in detail in the following publication:

A paper by Pastor López (PhD student@INAOE) has been accepted for pulication at the IX International Seminar on Medical Information Processing and Analysis to be held in Mexico city in November 2013. The title of the paper is: Bag-of-Visual-Ngrams for Histopathology Image Categorization, and it is a result of a collaboration between INAOE (Mexico) and UNAL (Colombia).

Two (out of three submitted) papers have been accepted for the 18th Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition CIARP-2013 conference to be held in Havana, Cuba. The accepted papers are:

• A One-shot DTW-Based Method for Early Gesture Recognition. By Yared Sabinas, Eduardo Morales, Hugo Jair Escalante.
• Genetic Programming of Heterogeneous Ensembles for Classification. By Hugo Jair Escalante, Niusvel Acosta, Alicia Morales, A. Gago.

New paper in Neurocomputing A new paper by Mario Graff has been accepted in Neurocomputing. The paper is about Models of Performance of Time Series Forecasters. The paper is available online since July 1st, 2013. July 11, 2013.

Del 3 al 4 de Julio de 2013 se lleva a cabo el Taller Latinoaméricano de tratamiento automático del lenguaje. El TLTAL pretende reunir a la comunidad especializada en el TALH bajo el contexto específico de la Latinoamérica hispanoparlante (al menos en este primer taller). El objetivo primario es reunir a los principales grupos de investigación en el TALH y definir estrategias pertinentes orientadas, en un primer tiempo, al tratamiento del idioma español, y en un segundo tiempo, a abordar el rico contexto multilingüe propio de la región. El seminario se llevará a cabo en Puebla. July 3, 2013.

 Los días 13 y 14 de Junio de 2013 se llevará a cabo el 1er. Seminario Nacional de Aprendizaje e Inteligencia Computacional. El SNAIC 2013 es el primero de una serie de seminarios anuales de alta calidad en su rama con amplias expectativas de desarrollo en el ámbito nacional con el fin de crear lazos de colaboración para mejorar la competitividad tecnológica de nuestro país a nivel internacional. El seminario tendrá lugar en el INAOE, en Tonantzintla, Puebla. June 10, 2013.

A new challenge on Multimodal Gesture Recognition has just started, there is an associated workshop at ICMI 2013: The ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction. The challenge and workshop are organized by colleagues from Barcelona and it is sponsored by ChaLearn. June 05, 2013.
